Interior Decoration ideas & hints

Which makes for the better fingerplate – copper or brass?

There is no “best” metal for a fingerplate – it is largely a matter of personal preference. As an observation only, we find that if the room’s interior is in ‘warm tones’, the gold from the brass or the reds from the copper compliment the décor well, whilst if the room’s interior is predominantly in ‘cool tones’, the yellow of the brass blends in better than the sunburnt glow of the copper.

But copper is softer than brass – won’t copper plates dent in use?

Brass is certainly the stronger metal. If you are concerned about untoward dents and shunts, we recommend a simple soution: strengthen a copper fingerplate by sandwiching a brass fingerplate (of the same design) between the door and the copper fingerplate on top. Voila!

Do I need to fix fingerplates to both sides of my doors?

This is purely up to personal taste as there are no hard and fast rules. We would say go with your eye – if plates on both sides suit your décor, then go for two!

Where should I position my fingerplates on my doors?

You guessed it - no hard and fast rules on this one either. In practice, we would say position the fingerplate at the point on the door where it is most likely to be touched when being pulled or pushed.

But we also know that some of our customers have found our fingerplates an ideal way of concealing blemishes in door finishes, marks in the wood or even holes as a result of pervious door handles!!

So you can position them where you feel they look best!

Do they need to be matching fingerplates in either the rooms or hallway/landings?

Once again, this we find is purely up to your own personal taste. Some people like to have all matching plates in the hallway, with a different fingerplate on the inside of the room to reflect the rooms decorative period. Others prefer to announce the décor of the room behind the door by have the fingerplate on the outside of the door, thereby setting the tone for the period as you walk into the room.
